about
A catalog of process and exploration, an explosion made me think of you, is work from the day to day sound and music work emanating from Roberto Carlos Lange's studio practice. This piece is first in a series that will punctuate documented compositions new and old.
an explosion made me think of you, was created on the MPC 2000 XL. The MPC is a sound machine that Roberto calls his first instrument. It's an instrument he received in 1999 with no sounds inside, just a blank slate. His compositions and recorded sound works were based on sampling records, recording synthesizers, and field recordings. The MPC's technical limitations (32mb memory) allows him to come up with creative compositional circumstances.
Made in August of 2018, the Brooklyn summer humidity sticks to this song like a rush-hour subway ride at 5 pm. Deeply intertwined with Roberto's compositional ideas in music by using sound to move through time vertically, stacking harmonics and tones like shapes and colors. Building light and creating shadows. This song, in particular, works with looped sound, slowly being filtered, slightly delayed, and ever-changing but static in origin. "It's a tree in a field with all of its leaves moving and vibrating as the wind tickles them and keeps it all subtly visibly in motion while always standing still," say's Lange.
The song builds throughout its seven minute run time. Not in a climatic ever-growing bombastic crescendo, but in a transcending way. It creates a gaussian blur over the sphere of the world around you and lets it all glow and illuminate your immediate surroundings with pulsating soft light.
